A number of people each month are looking on the Internet for information about how to build subwoofer boxes. Are you interested in building sub boxes? If you are, you are probably looking for ways to help you to be able to do it correctly and easily. Well you are in luck! I have come across some ideas that may interest you.
Subwoofer Design
If you want to build custom subwoofer enclosures you must how to do it correctly. If you are just starting out in building subwoofer enclosures, such as sealed enclosures, ported enclosures, etc., then knowing the math helps. Do a search on the titles of the programs below to get more information to help you.
You can use a program called "Blaubox" and the other is called "WinISD". These help you with the math that is needed so you can design sealed, ported, and even bandpass subwoofer enclosures. In order to use them you will need to know the parameters of your subs. Parameters such as: Fs, Q, Qts, Re, Vas, among others. By having these parameters you can plug them in and it will give you a basic design for your subwoofer box. It will give you the internal volume needed and port and bandpass lengths. By using these parameters you will be building a sub box that is perfectly tuned for your subwoofer.
It's almost like your subwoofer is a musical instrument and you are tuning it to sound good. If you build a sub box that is way to big for your particular sub the bass will be weak, or if it's too small you will restrict the cone. To get the most out of your sub when it comes to dB's (noise level) and to develop it to the right sub frequency you will need to use these items or you will have to do all the work by hand. It is possible to do it by hand, but it is much easier when it can be done it for you. It's much like using a calculator. You can do math by hand or you can punch it in a calculator and do it a lot faster.
Most subwoofers have the parameters in the box when you buy it. Others that are hardcore about sub boxes realize that every subwoofer has its own characteristics and so they like to measure there own parameters. That is a story for another article. And if you don't have the parameters on your sub all you have to do is do a search on the internet for your brand, model, and size of the sub and you will find websites that list the parameters. You might even be able to find sub box designs already laid out for you. In that case all you have to do is build it then.
Good luck in building your sub enclosure. If you do it right, it will be loud, it will boom, and it will amaze.
